The organisation was handed the Best Responsible Care Project Award from the GPCA after its implementation of the change led to positive changes including reduced traffic risk on some of Abu Dhabi's busiest roads, thereby saving costs and reducing CO2 emissions.
"We are pleased to receive such a prestigious award that embodies Borouge's strong strive to improve its Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) performance within the framework of our corporate Responsible Care programmes," said Abdulaziz Alhajri, CEO Abu Dhabi Polymers Company, Borouge. "As an active founding member of GPCA, Borouge will continue to enhance its commitment to Responsible Care throughout its operations, marketing activities and the products we provide to our customers worldwide."
Of the total 63 entries submitted for the three award categories, 21 companies submitted their most prestigious HSSE entries, in an attempt to be acknowledged for the Best Responsible Care Project Award. However, the Award was granted to Borouge for its Sustainable Supply Chain Project during the first GPCA Responsible Care Awards ceremony organised as part of the 1st GPCA Responsible Care Conference which was held at the Ritz DIFC in Dubai from October 11th-13th 2015. The Awards aim to recognise and share the experiences of the companies and individuals who have exemplified leadership and outstanding performance based on the implementation and execution of the Responsible Care programme over the preceding two years.
"Highlighting the sustainability benefits of this innovative project, and following the spirit of the Responsible Care that we are committed to, we will significantly contribute to reducing traffic risks on the roads of Abu Dhabi Emirate, substantially lower greenhouse gas emissions, and realise costs benefits," said Ahmed Al Shamsi, Senior Vice-President Global Supply Chain Management, Borouge.
The project involves the transportation of Borouge’s imported raw chemical materials aboard empty container ships travelling back to its manufacturing facility in Ruwais after delivering its products at Khalifa Port. Since implementation, and based on a five year projection, the benefits include:
11,000 tonnes of hazardous chemicals are no longer transported by land using some of Abu Dhabi’s busiest and most dangerous roads
Number of journeys of trucks on Abu Dhabi roads are reduced by 17,500; culminating in a reduction of 8.75 million kilometers
Reduction of 79 per cent of CO2 emissions
Economic saving potential of US$12 million.
Alan Izzard, Borouge's Senior Advisor and Director Responsible Care & SQAS at GPCA, also received a Special Recognition Award for his role in spearheading the efforts of the Responsible Care Programme in the Gulf Region that have resulted in regional and global recognition for the GCC Chemical and Petrochemical Industry.
